Insurance Discounts For Hardening Your Home
When you have your home hurricane-hardened through REBUILD Northwest Florida, in addition to FEMA paying 75% of the costs, you may also be eligible for a discount on your windstorm insurance premium. Homeowners have reported that they have been able to save anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to 50% on their annual windstorm premiums. Often homeowners find that their insurance discounts will amortize their 25% cost share for their house-hardening in just a few years.
Securing your discount; however, can be a tedious process. To navigate the process more smoothly, we suggest that you consider these steps:
STEP 1. Meet with your personal insurance agent once you have received your customized scope of work from REBUILD. By reviewing the scope of work, your agent may be able to provide you an estimate of how much discount you may receive. The windstorm insurance calculator at the following link may also be helpful.
STEP 2. After your home has been hardened and received its final inspection, the contractor will provide you a package of documentation showing the details of the work completed on your home. Take this information to your insurance agent, who will advise you of what steps you may need to take next.
STEP 3. Typically but not always, the next step is to get an insurance inspection that will provide you with a completed OIR Form 1802 (Florida Office of Insurance Regulation Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form). Please note that REBUILD Northwest Florida is not permitted to complete this form for you. The form may be filled out by an inspector from your insurance company or by an independent licensed inspector retained by you. Here is what the form looks like:
Frequently Asked Questions
If your agent has questions about the work that was performed by REBUILD that cannot be answered by the third party inspector who was hired to complete the OIR-1802, then you should provide your agent with the documentation provided by REBUILD upon completion of your project. The documentation package will have the Florida Product Approval information and photos for the products installed on your home. The Florida Product Approval numbers will provide all of the information necessary for the OIR-1802 form. If there are still questions, call our office at (850) 497-7024 and ask for the insurance help line.
You will need to be sure that the OIR-1802 form is properly completed and you are receiving the appropriate credits. This can be done by cross-referencing the photos provided by REBUILD with the photos and inspection report from your wind mitigation insurance inspection. Your insurance agent should be able to help you with that. If there are still questions, please call our office at (850) 497-7024 and ask for the insurance help line.
It is important to know that, in some cases, homeowners are already receiving discounts for the wind portion of their premium for features already on the home PRIOR to completing REBUILD’s program. In these cases the discount may not be as much as expected. You should ask you insurance agent what discounts you were getting before the REBUILD work and what you were getting after the completion of the REBUILD work. This may help determine why your discount was less than expected. Remember, our goal at REBUILD is to strengthen homes; we have no control over how and what discounts are awarded. If there are still questions, call our office at (850) 497-7024 and ask for the insurance help line.
Call your agent to check on the status of your discount.
In addition to the $1,555/yr., we received a refund of $171 on the previous year for an immediate savings of $1,726 at a total cost of $1,915 including all inspections!!!!
Rebuild NWFL was very professional. Also, the construction workers were professional craftsmen who were efficient, responsive, and easy to work with.
We are TOTALLY SATISFIED and have recruited a neighbor to participate.
GOD BLESS your efforts to raise the hurricane preparedness of NWFL in an extremely economical process!!!!!
“I wanted to give you some information from our hurricane mitigation.
When the paperwork was submitted to our insurer, we received approximately $1,500 back from our mortgage escrow account. It also lowered our house payments $100.00 per month.
I had hoped for a reduction, but never expected that much.
I have told family and friends about it, and I will keep passing the word along.
Thanks for this great program.”
This is one of the best deals going. My insurance company sent me a notice and they gave me a $1200 credit. I don't think you could ask for a better deal since I only spent approximately $1800, which included some upgrades I had requested.
